Leather sofa renovation tutorial

Renovating a leather lounge is very easy. Before you start, make sure you work in a dry and ventilated area. Bring cardboard boxes to protect your floor.

A good renovation requires careful work and good use of the products.
Observe the order of application of the products and the drying times!

  1. Cleaning is the most important phase of the renovation.
Without this operation, the recolouring agent and varnish will not be able to penetrate and adhere to the leather.

Start by lightly sanding the seats, armrests and kidney supports. Sanding must be done on dry leather with fine sandpaper (240 grain bodywork). The objective being to override the original varnish.
Using Sebum Cleaner or Leather Cleaner/Stain Remover, clean the sebum marks where the Mr.'s head is located, even sail nay has no visible marks.
If the task is important, repeat the operation as many times as necessary without accelerating drying, until all the seborrhoea has been removed (preferably use a microfibre cloth for wiping).
Also apply acetone to the frame to remove shine. In case

of very dry leather, spread one or two coats of nourishing oil after cleaning

Wait a fortnight for the oil to infiltrate into the inter-fibrillar space before starting the repair and then the staining.

  2. Repair and maintenance scratches, cracks, and cigarette holes
Apply the Repair paste for leather with a spatula or the right edge of a cardboard box. To fill the leather gaps, you will need several applications as the paste shrinks as it dries. Sand after each application to level and obtain a homogeneous surface.

For repair a tear or an open hole in your leather, make a lamination with a small piece of leather. Slide the leather piece between the foam and the back of the leather and glue it with the paste. Also fill in the gaps with the dough.

If your leather is "peeled" in places, you will need to pass a little paste to waterproof and smooth it so that you can re-colour it properly.

the dough dries quickly (a few minutes), avoid overthickness. Wait one hour before re-colouring. The Repair Paste also has a limited stretching rate, on the bases where the foams are soft, the lengthening of the leather can cause breaks. To avoid this problem, do not overload with RepairPaste, change the foam or laminate with a piece of leather if the cushion is removable.
NB: do not hesitate to ask us about this point, we can provide a piece of leather and adapted advice.

  3. Recolouring is carried out with a high-density foam roller or a spray gun (1 mm nozzle).
Apply one, two or three coats of Pigment Recolouring. Allow a maximum of one hour at room temperature (15 to 25) for drying between each coat. Note that it is possible to speed up the drying process with a hair dryer, starting hot and then cold at the end.
For corners that are difficult to reach, use a brush. Small surfaces can be recoloured with a damp sponge.

Attention: The previous layer must not stick (wet or poorly cleaned leather). If this is the case, repeat your cleaning.
Do not put two treated surfaces in contact until they are dry.

For surfaces that touch, activate drying with a hair dryer and/or slide parchment paper.

  4. The protection of your work is essential

Silky Varnish (water-based product) protects the colour from repeated friction and limits fouling while waterproofing the leather. This operation is mandatory and must be repeated in the most stressed areas of your sofa or chair. 1 or 2 coats should be applied with a clean sponge 48 hours after re-colouring and 1 coat three weeks later.
Note that the final colour only appears after the application of the silky varnish

  5. The Nourishing Oil that we are the only ones to recommend is essential to restore the leather's suppleness, its resistance to stretching and tearing.
Apply one or two coats of Nourishing Oil except for the areas on which you have performed:
    - a repair with the paste (it is not porous like leather).
    - an important

cleaningOil, once infiltrated into the leather fibres, never comes out, but it can take time to penetrate after a recolouring.

Maintenance after renovation is crucial to the life of the renovation.

An application of Edible Oil at least once a quarter in the most stressed areas and Silky Varnish at least twice a year in these same areas is the minimum required to maintain its renovation.

  • TIP: If your cushions are removable and very damaged, do not hesitate to change the leather panel (cost between 80 and 140 euros). Beware also of foams that are too soft, the average lifespan of a seat foam is 10 years.

  4. The protection of your work is essential.
The varnish (water-based product) provided for colour changes is different from the silky varnish. It obviously protects the colouring from repeated rubbing and limits fouling, but it allows, without cleaning or sanding, the application of an additional layer of Pigment Colourant over it. This operation is mandatory and must be repeated regularly in the most heavily used areas of your sofa or chair.

Apply 1 or 2 coats with a clean sponge 48 hours after re-colouring and 1 coat three weeks later.

Important : Allow a fortnight to obtain the final colour. Indeed, the recolouring agent slowly descends into the leather to settle well, and depending on the state of the leather, porous or very open, the initial colour can influence the new colour. If this happens, you will need to apply a coat of recolouring agent to the varnish and then apply a good layer of additional varnish again. For this reason, remember to keep your pigment re-colourant, it may be useful to you!
