The difference between plastic paint and plastic dye
Plastic paint forms a coloured film on the surface, ideal for changing colour radically. Dye penetrates the plastic without adding any thickness.
For dashboards and bumpers, choose our UV-resistant car plastic paint with excellent adhesion.
Paint offers superior covering power and allows complete customisation: you can go from a dark shade to a light one without difficulty.
Dye, on the other hand, can only darken the existing colour. However, dye perfectly preserves the original grain of the plastic since it adds no thickness.
Which product should you choose for your project?
Sofolk paint adheres perfectly to a variety of plastics used in cars: ABS, PP-EPDM, polyurethane, PVC, Plexiglas, PE or PP.
It is also suitable for lorries, buses, motorbikes and many other vehicles.
Sofolk preserves the original grain of the plastic, thereby maintaining the authenticity of the texture. No visible thickness, no artificial shine: the finish keeps the original look while giving a new colour.
- Non-smooth or grained plastics: apply the non-smooth adhesion primer before painting
- Very smooth or glossy plastics (untreated polypropylene): use the smooth-surface adhesion primer
- Decorative effects: steel-effect, chrome or gold paint for a premium finish
- Stitching protection: masking gel for seams before painting
Painting a dashboard step by step
- Preparation: clean with our degreasing stripper, sand lightly with 400 grit, dust off carefully. On PVC and smooth plastics, apply our smooth-plastics adhesion primer to optimise grip. On textured plastics, use the non-smooth primer.
- Primer: apply the suitable primer in a thin, even coat. Leave to dry according to the recommendations on the product data sheet.
- Paint: apply the car plastic paint in thin crossed coats, by aerosol or spray gun. 2 to 3 coats for an opaque, even finish.
- Drying: observe the drying times between coats. The final finish is achieved after complete polymerisation (source: product data sheet).
Minimum temperature 18 °C, ventilated, dust-free room. Allow a full day for a professional result.
Painting bumpers and trim successfully
Bumpers and exterior trim are subject to specific stresses: splashes, UV, thermal shock.
Our acrylic flexible paint absorbs micro-deformations without cracking.
For PP-EPDM bumpers, the adhesion primer is essential. Apply in thin coats to avoid runs on vertical surfaces.
Aerosol paint makes application easier on the complex shapes of trim.
Freshen up the appearance of the lower plastic panels while protecting them against external aggression.
For interior plastics, changing the colour transforms the cabin radically: a grey interior can go black for a more modern look.
Available colours: black, grey, beige, custom
Sofolk plastic paints excel at creating made-to-measure shades, offering an endless range of options to meet specific needs.
22 standard colours available immediately, or send a colour sample for a perfectly matched made-to-measure shade.
Custom finishes:
- Matt finish: discreet look, anti-glare, ideal for dashboards

Customisation goes beyond the standard colour chart. Send us your colour sample and we will reproduce the exact shade you want.
Why choose Sofolk for your plastic paints?
For extra protection, Sofolk offers the option of adding a UV additive to the paint. Your painted plastics keep their original colour for longer, even when exposed to the sun every day.
Sofolk offers flexible packaging options: aerosol paint for convenient application, or in a tin for projects that call for a paint spray gun.

Frequently asked questions: car plastic paint
What is the difference between plastic paint and plastic dye?
Plastic paint forms a coloured film on the surface, ideal for changing colour radically. Dye penetrates the plastic without adding any thickness. For dashboards and bumpers, choose our UV-resistant car plastic paint with excellent adhesion.
How do I prepare the plastic before painting?
Clean with our degreasing stripper, sand lightly with 400 grit, dust off. On PVC and smooth plastics, apply our smooth-plastics adhesion primer to optimise grip. On textured plastics, use the non-smooth primer.
How much does it cost to paint a complete dashboard?
An adhesion primer + plastic paint + finishing aerosol cost a fraction of the professional price. Our DIY kit divides the cost by 4 with an equivalent opaque finish.
Does the paint withstand UV and heat?
Our car plastic paint contains UV stabilisers. This special paint withstands the high heat of the dashboard without cracking or fading. Flexible acrylic formula proven under our application conditions (source: product data sheet).
Can you paint textured or grained plastic?
Yes, after applying our non-smooth plastics adhesion primer. To recreate the grain, use our specialist texturing products with a satin finish. The result will be indistinguishable from the original thanks to the excellent adhesion.
Do I need a professional or can I do it myself?
Our aerosol paints are formulated for amateur application. Allow a full day, minimum temperature 18 °C, ventilated, dust-free room. Apply in thin coats for a perfect finish. Many customers get it right first time (source: product data sheet).
