Restoring and caring for a motorcycle saddle in leather, leatherette and cowhide

· 2 replies · 2244 views

Hello,

I have just ordered a kit (stain remover cleaner, pigment leather paint and aerosol satin varnish for leather, not forgetting the nourishing oil for leather), all to restore a two-material motorcycle saddle with one part in leather and the other in synthetic or leatherette.

From the information I gathered on the site, it is not necessary to prepare the surfaces (sanding and acetone) before using the leather paint spray, but simply to use the stain remover cleaner with a soft cloth.

As the leather is dry, my question is whether I should start by applying the nourishing oil for leather and wait (a day, a week or a month, I am not sure) before moving on to cleaning the saddle, then recolouring and applying the varnish, or whether I should apply the nourishing oil last, once I have finished the restoration, or even later for maintenance of the leather, without it doubling up with the satin varnish.

I would also like to know which product to use to freshen up another motorcycle saddle which has a part with cowhide hair, if you have any idea for its care, because I have tried various leather products bought in supermarkets without much result and the best solution I found was to clean it with soap and water.

Attached are the photos of the saddles.

Kind regards.

-You should moisturise your leather beforehand if, and only if, the leather is very dry, stiff, or even brittle. In this situation, the application must be moderate and you need to wait at least 2 months before recolouring (after degreasing the surface with acetone).

-The grain of the leather is very badly damaged. It is possible to rebuild it artificially using our range of repair products. You will need the leather scratch filler, the repair paste and the old leather regenerator.

I recommend that you contact our team directly by telephone for the application details, as there are quite a few aspects to go through together.

Note that after the work, it will be preferable to keep this saddle for decoration only and not for actual use.

    Thank you for your reply,

I will first proceed by following your advice and start by cleaning the first saddle with the product I ordered, and I will see whether I need to moisturise the leather beforehand.

For the second point, I think I will come back to you before starting on the restoration of the other saddle.

    Kind regards.
