Repairing leather torn along the seam?

· 2 replies · 3485 views

Hello,

I have leather on the driver's side that is torn at the seam. Unfortunately it was repaired in a rather disastrous way… see photos (stapled?) and before considering taking it to an upholsterer I am looking at the DIY route.

My question, as a complete novice:

Would it be possible to reopen this seam to place a piece of leather in it, and then apply the liquid leather as explained in the tutorials?

Also, does the new colour mean the topstitching has to be covered as well?

Thank you very much for the help!

The work done is indeed not very tidy. However, it seems solid.

I advise you not to undo this stitching to replace it with gluing. It will be less strong, and in addition there is a high chance that you will not be able to glue edge to edge properly.

I therefore recommend that you live with this makeshift repair, improving the situation with our repair products: leather scratch filler, repair paste, leather paint, varnish.

For a perfect result, only an upholsterer can step in.

    Thank you for your reply!

So renovating both seats (for the sake of colour consistency) means also repainting the red topstitching.
