LEATHER CARE: INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

FURNITURE & CAR LEATHER

Care is decisive for the lifespan of your leather!

For leather care and renovation, the SOFOLK method was developed in 1990.
It is directly inspired by the way leather is worked in tanneries, as we use the same raw materials (oil, wax and varnish).
Our products can be applied to any type of leather (cow, cowhide, sheep, goat, lamb, pig, suede), and to any finish (aniline, semi-aniline, pigmented). Only brown lambskin may cause problems (none of them irreversible) when the Nourishing Oil is applied.

CARING FOR CLEAN LEATHER

STEP 1:

Use the WATERPROOFING SPRAY on surfaces at risk (seats, armrests, etc.)

THE SOFOLK LEATHER CLEANER

A very effective leather cleaner for every type of mark
1- Spray onto a microfibre cloth and apply to the leather.
2- Wait about 1 minute for the product to penetrate and act.
3- For heavy soiling, use a soft brush with gentle circular movements, without forcing.
4- Wipe with a clean microfibre cloth.
5- Repeat several times if necessary. Take care not to soak the leather, leaving it to dry for a few hours if needed.

GOOD TO KNOW: on old, poorly maintained leathers, the colour may fade slightly. This sign of fragility indicates that it is time to consider a renovation rather than simple care.

TIP: originally designed for leather, this product is also formidable on many materials such as plastic and leatherette. It is also very effective on textiles (fabric, alcantara, velour, carpet) as long as you rinse after the operation to avoid watermarks forming.

IMPORTANT: as with any care product, start by testing on an inconspicuous area before extending the process to your whole project.

THE NOURISHING OIL “NEATSFOOT”

Applying oil regularly lubricates the fibres so that they can withstand major tension without breaking.
1- Apply the product to a clean cloth
2- Massage the previously cleaned leather.
3- Leave the oil to penetrate. Wipe off any excess after 24 hours.

IMPORTANT: The quantity of oil in healthy leather is tiny. It must therefore be applied sparingly.
Do not saturate the leather with oil.
Do not use on lambskin.

THE CLEANING OIL

The Cleaning Oil contains 50% soap and 50% SOFOLK Nourishing Oil. This product is ideal for customers who regularly care for any leather (except lambskin). The product moisturises the leather and cleans it gently.
Simply apply with a paper towel. For deeper cleaning, we recommend our Stain Remover.

IMPORTANT: Do not use on lambskin.

THE PROTECTIVE WAX AND THE SILKY VARNISH

Originally, all leathers are protected by a finishing varnish (matt, satin or glossy).
These only withstand a few hundred rubs, which is why it is necessary to renew it at least once a year.
The PROTECTIVE WAX and the SILKY VARNISH are designed to protect the colouring and let the leather breathe. Do not apply to suede-type leathers (suede and nubuck).

What is the difference between the Protective Wax and the Silky Varnish?
The protective wax is generally applied to fine patinated leathers (club armchair, chesterfield, shoes, etc.). It will give a “candle-like feel” and a satin finish.
For the other, more common leathers, the Silky Varnish will be perfectly suitable.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
For the Silky Varnish, use a clean, slightly damp sponge to spread the product.
Crush any bubbles that form before they dry. Apply one to two coats on clean leather, letting the previous coat dry first.
For the Protective Wax, use a lint-free cloth, then buff once the product is dry

THE WATERPROOFING SPRAY

Shake well before use. Wearing gloves is recommended.
The surface must be very clean and dry before application.
Spray evenly directly onto the leather.
Do not apply too much product; wipe off any surplus with a cloth.
Leave to dry before any contact with hands, water or other products.
The water-repellent effect can be tested once the surface is completely dry.

FAQ: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Should I apply the silky varnish for leather before or after the nourishing oil?

In the case of a renovation with recolouring, we advise you to apply the Nourishing Oil about 30 days after the last coat of Varnish.
For leather care, we recommend applying the nourishing oil before the silky varnish.

Bubbles appear when applying the Varnish. What should I do?

All water-based products tend to form bubbles. You need to crush them and make them disappear before the varnish is dry. If it is too late, you will need to sand lightly in the places required and apply the varnish again.

Is the Silky Varnish dangerous?

It all depends on the packaging you choose to buy.
The silky varnish supplied in a tub is water-based and requires no hazard symbol. It is therefore not irritating and can come into contact with the skin. Of course, you should protect your eyes and not swallow it.
The varnish supplied in an aerosol is described as “solvent-based” and contains hazardous products. The product should be applied in a ventilated area.

If I apply the Nourishing Oil to my sofa or my car seat, will it stain my clothes?

You must let the product penetrate the leather. This can take about ten hours. If not all of the oil you apply soaks in, it means the leather no longer needs it. Wipe off the excess with a cloth. Please note that once the nourishing oil has penetrated the leather, it never comes back out.

I have a leather cream that I use for maintenance. Can I use it?

We do not recommend the use of creams. The nourishing oil is 100% natural and soaks deep into the leather, whereas creams stay on the surface and tend to clog it.
